NIH – Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS)
US government office in charge of strengthening knowledge and understanding of dietary supplements by evaluating scientific information, stimulating and supporting research, disseminating research results, and educating the public to foster an enhanced quality of life and health for the U.S. population.
Food & Drug Administration (FDA) – Dietary Supplements
US government agency responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. FDA regulates both finished dietary supplement products and dietary ingredients. FDA regulates dietary supplements under a different set of regulations than those covering “conventional” foods and drug products.
American Herbal Products Association
A private non-profit national trade association that promotes the responsible commerce of herbal products and helps maintain and improve market opportunities for companies that sell herbs, herbal and botanical products, and other health-related products, including foods, beverages, dietary supplements, and personal care products, and to ensure that consumers continue to enjoy informed access to a wide choice of goods.

American Herbal Pharmacopeia
A private non-profit that promotes the responsible use of herbal medicines and ensure they are used with the highest possible degree of efficacy and safety.
National Health Federation (NHF)
An organization working to protect individuals’ rights to choose to consume healthy food, take supplements and use alternative therapies without unnecessary government restrictions.
U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP)
A scientific nonprofit organization that sets standards for the identity, strength, quality, and purity of medicines, food ingredients, and dietary supplements manufactured, distributed and consumed worldwide.
National Sanitation Foundation
An independent, accredited organization, that develops ensures product and ingredient safety, giving both industry and consumers peace of mind through GMP compliance, accredited certification programs, testing services and training capabilities.
Emerson Quality Program (EQP)
A company that provides healthcare practitioners a convenient way to select and purchase from over 275 brands of professional-quality nutritional supplements, vitamins, prescription medications and natural health products. The EQP is Emerson Ecologic’s rigorous quality assurance program.
Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs)
The main government agency responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. The FDA cGMPs are an important tool to help ensure dietary supplement product quality, purity, consistency, and safety. The regulation helps assure consumers that they get accurately labeled and unadulterated dietary supplements by requiring current good manufacturing practices (CGMPs) in their manufacturing, packing, and holding.
